Compulsory Questions for each chapter

1. Read each chapter of the novel.  Write a short summary of each chapter—use NO MORE THAN five sentences for each. (*)
2. Make up five (* = 3) open-ended questions for each chapter.  Answer any TEN in good sentences. (*)
3. List five interesting, unusual or unknown words for each chapter, and tell what you think each means.  Use each in a meaningful sentence. (*)
4. Find two (* = 1) passages in each chapter that you find interesting or meaningful in some way.  Write out the quote, plus the page/paragraph where you found it.  Then explain in two or three sentences why you think that passage is worth noting.

2. Make a list of all of the problems that face Unemployed people in 2154 (Chapters 1-6) (* = 5)
a) Why do these problems exist?
b) Which problem do you think is the most important, and why? (*)
c) How would you feel about your life if you were Lisse?  What would you do about it? (*)
d) E:  You are an employed person.  Write a letter to me explaining how you feel about the unemployeds and what you think should be done to solve the problem.

3. What new problems face Lisse and her friends, from Chapters 7-9?  Make a list.  (*=5)
a) What do you think of the way they dealt with these problems?
b) Would you have done anything differently in their place?  Explain. (*)

CHOICE QUESTIONS:  do any two (* = 1; E = 3) of the following.

1. Use your list in question 1 above to write a detailed character analysis of Lisse.  How does she grow and develop as a person throughout the novel?
2. It is 20 years after the end of the book.  Pretend that you are Lisse, and write a memoir about something important that happened to you during those 20 years.
3. What does this book remind you of?  Make connections to experiences, shows, movies, books, etc.
4. You learn that ITTG is about to go out of print!  Write a letter to the publisher explaining why it would be a big mistake to let this novel go out of print.
5. What was the biggest surprise for you in the novel?  Explain.
6. Monica Hughes passed away recently.  Investigate her life and career and write her biography.
7. Make a “comic strip” based on the novel and its key incidents (like Mrs. Robertson’s charts).
8. Make up a “What if?” question and write a new scene based on your change.
9. Write a Reader’s Theatre script for one chapter of the book.
10. Come up with your own idea.  Get my approval for it, and then go ahead.  Think art, music, drama, dance…be as creative as possible.
