Economic:

•  How did your family meet their needs?  (food, clothing, shelter)
• How did you earn your spending money?  What would you consider a large amount of money?  Can you remember any prices?
• What things were considered special luxuries?  How did you get them?  Can you remember how much they cost?

Political:

• Who made the decisions in your family?  How?
• What decisions could you make for yourself?
• Do you have any memories about municipal, provincial or federal politics, or about world events that were happening then?

Kinship:

• Who were the members of your immediate family?  Did other relatives live close by?  How often did you visit each other?
• What special things did you do as a family?
• Who were your special friends?
• What events were important in your community?

Educational:

• What was your school experience like?
• What level of education did you obtain?
• Were you able to prepare for the career you wanted?  Why or why not?
• If you could have made another choice, what would it have been, and why?
• What are some of the important skills you learned out of school?  Who taught you?
• What are some of the things you taught yourself?
• What new skills have you learned since becoming an adult?

Ar tis tic :

• Did you learn about or participate in music, drama, visual arts, dance, language, writing, cooking, needlework, crafts, photography or any other sort of creative activity done just for pleasure or beauty?
• Were there any artistic aspects to ethnic or cultural celebrations your family observed (food, costumes, songs, crafts, dances)?

Recreational/Play:

• What did you, your family and your friends like to do for fun?
• What sports and games did you play?
• What did you do during evenings at home, or on weekends?

Religious:

• What religious observations, ceremonies, rituals and traditions were important in your life?
• What beliefs and values did your family, friends and community share?

Interesting:

• Do you have any other information to share about your way of life as a young teenager?
• Since then, what things have improved?  Which things have not improved?
• What are some of the major changes you have observed or experienced?

Part One:

• Create a reference grid or data sheet (self-interview) containing jot notes about your experience with the seven cultural patterns (economic, political, kinship, educational, artistic, recreational, religious).   Add any other interesting things about your life.
• Hand in your jot notes on Tuesday, September 10.   Later, you will be asked to put your information into paragraph form, but don't do it yet.

Part Two:

• Interview an older person about what his/her life was like at your age.  Make jot notes using the seven cultural patterns.  (See sample questions above.)  Add any other interesting things you learned.

Part Three:

• Write a short report in which you compare and contrast your life and the life of the person you interviewed.  What are the major differences, changes, advantages and disadvantages you can identify?  (Please don't start this section until I have looked over your jot notes.)

Part Four:

• Create a Power Point Presentation.  Watch for further details.  It's ok to start collecting photos and other clips you might want to include.  Save this material on a disk.  (If you need to do any scanning at school, you will need to give me plenty of notice!)
